Officials at UIC, along with public health officials in the city and U.S., are closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus, named COVID-19. The university has set up a webpage dedicated to providing students with information and updates on COVID-19.
The outbreak has been detected in more than 100 locations internationally, including in the United States.
The COVID-19 outbreak has been characterized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The UIC Wellness Center also shared information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control with tips on how to prevent and protect yourself during the outbreak including:
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Put your used tissue in the waste basket.
- If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
- Wash hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
