Chemical Engineering Associate Professor Meenesh Singh was recently featured on Green Sense, a podcast that explores practical, cost-effective, and innovative environmental solutions to real-world issues.

The podcast is hosted by Robert Colangelo, an entrepreneur, scientist, and author who talks with experts across a variety of global sectors, including energy, transportation, food, agriculture, water and waste management, and climate.

On the podcast, Singh and Colangelo discussed Singh’s research, where he is working to reduce the amount of energy required to produce hydrogen gas from water. He explained that this work is a critical advancement for enhancing fuel efficiency and promoting sustainable energy.

The idea behind the research is to use biochar as a carbon-rich additive to water to reduce the amount of electricity consumed by the process used to produce the necessary energy.

“One can use hydrogen and really drive the whole economy,” Singh said. “We can drive the industrial sector, we can drive the transportation sector, we can support our energy needs, and we have been using fossil-based sources, so we release carbon, but hydrogen has an energy content that’s almost three times that of gasoline.”

Colangelo added that using hydrogen as a fuel source is a game-changing technology.
