Caracotsios recognized for open textbook use in classroom

Department of Chemical Engineering Clinical Associate Professor Michael Caracotsios recently received the 2026-27 UIC Open Textbook Faculty Incentive Program award.
The program recognizes faculty who use and develop free open educational resources as alternatives to traditional textbooks for undergraduate courses. It is also part of UIC’s student success initiative and was developed in response to student concerns about the high cost of course materials.
The award is hosted by the Undergraduate Student Government in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the University Library.
Caracotsios was recognized for his textbook, “An Introduction to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics. Theory and Applications,” which was written for his Thermodynamics class.
Awardees each receive funding. Their plans include adopting open textbooks and other open education resources, modifying open textbooks and creating new open access supplemental material. Instructors will be able to use resources more pertinent to their courses and tailor exercises and quizzes to their syllabi.
